Grocery store donates thousands of apples

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) - Save A Lot food stores donated 10,000 Washington apples to the food bank to distribute in Liberty County. The Hinesville store and others in the chain took part in a promotion from November to January and earned shipments of apples for local charities that feed children.

Second Harvest representatives say the donation could not come at a better time of the year.

"With the school year ending, a lot of kids will be missing out on the couple of meals they get a day, breakfast and lunch at school," said Russ Toler, of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia.

Save A Lot received 80,000 apples in the promotion. They'll present another shipment on Friday in Douglas, Ga. The rest are going across the Southeast.
