Applications being accepted for Savannah Youth Council

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The city of Savannah is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 Savannah Youth Council.

The youth council runs through the next school year and is open to eighth-graders who live in Chatham County.

Since 2004, the council has been held up as a national model for providing young people with leadership opportunities and a chance to learn about government and engaged citizenship, according to the city of Savannah.

The youth council will work closely with the Savannah City Council and will have the opportunity to take educational field trips to meet legislators in Atlanta, the National League of Cities Annual Conference in Phoenix, Ariz., and Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.

The application deadline is June 17.
