Air Guardsmen Return Flag, Get New One

An American flag that flew over 13 countries during Operation Iraqi Freedom is back home. Last March, some members of the 165th Airlift Wing were enjoying breakfast at Cracker Barrel before heading off to war. They'd been looking for an American flag to take with them, but couldn't find one big enough or sturdy enough in a store. But they found one at the restaurant.

"We were trying to create a diversion on how to get the flag out of the restaurant," recalled Lt. Col. Steven Melton. "And then my mother-in-law said, 'You can't do that. Just ask the manager for it.' And he gave it to us."

The manager gave them the flag on one condition, that they take good care of it and return it when they came home. At a special ceremony earlier today in Nashville, Cracker Barrel's corporate headquarters gave these airmen a new flag to fly when they're deployed tomorrow. This one they get to keep.
