TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - The U.S. Coast Guard Station Tybee Island will be holding a boating safety event Saturday morning.
The open house aims to educate mariners and provide an understanding of local agencies that are responsible for responding to maritime distress in the area, according to the Coast Guard.
It will take place at the station's grounds at 9 a.m. Saturday at Cockspur Island.
These agencies will be at the event: Coast Guard Auxiliary, Savannah Navy League, Tybee Fire Department, Tybee Marine Rescue Squadron, Tybee Island Sail and Power Squadron, Chatham County Marine Patrol, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The open house will also feature educational booths.
Boaters can bring their boats and receive a courtesy inspection by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Station Tybee Island crewmembers will support a flare shoot allowing participants to bring their own old pyrotechnics and launch them in a safe, monitored, and facilitated setting onboard Station Tybee Island's grounds, according to the Coast Guard.
The flare shoot is to promote an educational approach and to prepare boaters for any future possible emergency situations.
The event will last until approximately 3 p.m.
