EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - The Effingham County Sheriff's Office has identified a driver who was killed in a car crash after a chase.
A Springfield police officer tried to pull over Dean Troy Stevens, 51, of Fairfax, S.C., at about 11 p.m. Monday.
Stevens failed to yield and an Effingham County sheriff's deputy took the lead in the pursuit in the area of Highway 21 and 3rd Street, according to the sheriff's office.
Stevens continued down 3rd Street, where he accelerated as he crossed over the railroad tracks and struck an embankment, according to the sheriff's office.
Stevens was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. No other injuries have been reported. Initial results from an autopsy indicate Stevens died of multiple injuries sustained in the accident.
