Vietnam Vet Greets Troops

Carroll Baker Carroll Baker

WTOC was there this morning as airmen of the 165th Airlift Wing got a special sendoff. Carroll Baker is a retired military man, himself, and his goal is to make sure all of our troops get the goodbye they deserve. Day or night, homecoming or sendoff, Baker has a job to do: giving the troops the recognition he never saw.

"I'm a Vietnam Veteran, and when we left, there was no one to say goodbye, and when we arrived home, there was no one to say welcome home," Baker told us. So he stands on the tarmac, waving the flag to honor his fellow men and women of the military.

"I thought it would be something good to do, to stand here and hold the flag and wave the flag and say, 'We love you and we support you and thanks for serving your country,'" he told us.

Even he is not sure how many deployments he's greeted. "I've lost count," he said. "I've been here with the flag for most of the deployments. I feel honored to be here and hold the flag."

Baker says he'll continue to stand up for the troops with his flag for as long as he's able and as long as they're deployed around the world.
