The 2003 City of Savannah elections are right around the corner, and many local organizations are voicing their collective opinions, including the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. This afternoon, the chamber put forward four issues about which it feels strongly, including the consolidation of the city and county police departments.
"It's not a perfect arrangement, necessarily," said Bob Colvin, president of the chamber. "But over time, our ability to really duplicate administrative costs, reduce duplicate infrastructure and for us, to long term put more officers on the street is absolutely imperative."
Other issues the chamber supports include the improvement of government operations and communications, transportation and infrastructure, and new tourism solicitations.
