The News at Daybreak is starting a new weekly series called Fit Club, that aims to get you in shape, by giving you exercise and weight loss tips.
Whether you are getting ready for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, want to get in shape for summer or your doctor is telling you may need to shed some pounds in order to have better health, Fit Club wants to help shape a healthier and happier you.
This week WTOC's Lynda Figueredo met with Khristine Hammond, an exercise physiologist at Fitness One, to see how we can get started on this fitness journey together.
First rule of Fit Club set specific, manageable goals. For example, plan to exercise for 20 to 30 minutes, at least three times a week. Don't forget to track your progress by writing it down. Second, schedule your exercise sessions like any other appointment. Also, make sure you have your gym bag in the car, or leave your shoes by the door to remind you to get moving.
Finally, find a gym, buddy or group, when someone is depending on you or striving for the same goals, it will help motivate you.
"Ask what are your goals to lose weight? To get more fit? Are they a smoker and want to stop smoking? Do they want to do the Rock 'n' Roll marathon? So what is the goal?," said Hammond.
How to find a club.
"Go out there and find what fits your personality and where you feel comfortable," said Hammond. "Then when you sign up ask if they offer an instructional session to get you started on a program, if they don't offer that, inquire about a personal trainer"
Next take your beginning measurements to see how you progress.
"Not everyone losses weight off the bat, but there are some composition changes," said Hammond. "You want to see what fat loss they are making rather than weight loss. That is a good place to start."
The easiest part of starting an exercise program is making the decision to do it. The hardest part is following through with your plans. Hammond says planning an preparation are key when getting starting a weight loss and exercise program, but to be successful, you need motivation. Fit Club aims to inspire you and change your life one week at a time.
You can join the Fit Club every Tuesday on the News at Daybreak for your weekly health and weight loss tip of the week.
