ESTILL, SC (WTOC) - Several people were recovering on Friday, after a riot at the Federal Correctional Institution in Estill, South Carolina on Thursday night.
The Hampton County Guardian Newspaper, Hampton County EMS and other emergency responders were called after a reported fight at the Federal Correctional Institution in Estill.
The call came in to 911 dispatch around 8:20 p.m. of a fight involving multiple injured persons.
There was a large scale fight that occured in the prison's recreation yard.
There were anywhere from 40 to 50 people that were assessed on the scene, but only nine inmates needed to be transported to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries after reportedly being beaten by shovels and rakes. Of the nine inmates transported to local hospitals, seven were treated and have since returned to the institution.
There were no reports of staff injuries.
As of Friday, the institution reported that it was secure and had been placed on lockdown status. They also said that at no time was there any danger to the public. The FBI was notified and the incident is currently under investigation.
The prison is 50 miles north of Savannah.
