Open house next week for Johnny Mercer project

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Department of Engineering will be holding an open house about the Johnny Mercer Pedestrian Improvement project.

The meeting will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. June 9 at the May Howard Elementary School located at 115 Wilmington Island Rd.

The project would involve installing 8-foot wide multi-use path and 5 foot wide sidewalks beginning at the intersection of Concord Road and Penn Waller Road, then traveling north to the intersection of Penn Waller Road and Johnny Mercer Boulevard, then west to approximately 300 feet past Mercer's Plaza on Johnny Mercer Boulevard, according to the Chatham Co. Commission.

The project would also involve traffic changes on Johnny Mercer Boulevard.

The public can view the proposed project at the open house, ask questions and comment on the proposal.

Written statements will be accepted about the project until June 23. Written statements may be submitted to:

    A sculpture was dedicated on Saturday to a prominent cyclist in the community who was killed back in 2016. Avid Hilton Head cyclist and founding member of Hilton Head Cycling Jeff Garske was hit and killed by a drunk driver on the Cross Island Parkway two years ago on August 18th.
