One Savannah veteran is being recognized for his work in the community. Jerry Walker was named the Veteran of the Year by the Veterans Council of Chatham County. Walker served two tours in Vietnam with the Army. He's been honored with numerous medals including the bronze star, the purple heart, and the air medal. In addition to being a life-long member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, he's also helped establish scholarship programs and volunteers at the Savannah VA clinic, driving veterans to and from the veterans' hospital in Charleston.
"It makes me feel wonderful," Walker said of the award. "I was struck by...I was speechless. It took me a day or two to recuperate when I realized I had been selected Veteran of the Year."
Also at the event, Arnice Mauldin was named the parade marshal for this year's Veterans' Day parade. It'll be held next month in downtown Savannah.
