Man's body discovered in Savannah River

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A dead body been found Wednesday afternoon in the Savannah River.

Two young men boating on the Savannah River said they discovered the body and notified police.

One of the boaters said they was just taking a boat ride and they saw seen a body floating. "I was glad I was here to help," he told WTOC.

The other man said the body was floating in the middle of the river. He said they held onto the shirt and pulled it over to the paramedics.

A section of the Savannah Riverwalk was closed off for several hours until Savannah Fire could remove the body, according to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police.

The body is that of a 30-something black male. Police said that based on his identification, they do not believe he is from the area.

Both violent crimes and forensics units are at the scene.
