STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - The school year is over for some, but one group is using the first few days of summer vacation to learn chess.
The Georgia Southern University's Department of Continuing Education is hosting their annual chess camp. Youngsters and a few adults are taking part in the beginners camp while others are participating in the advanced camp. It is supported through the Ogeechee River Scholastic Chess Association and instructor Mike Kruse.
Organizers say chess is the game for life.
"The University of Maryland, University of Texas, and a couple of other schools offer chess scholarships. So it is certainly more than a conversation starter. You can play the rest of your life," said J. Marie Lutz of, GSU's continuing education program.
The camps continue through Thursday.
