Body found in river identified

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Police have confirmed the identity of a 36-year-old North Carolina man whose body was found Wednesday afternoon in the Savannah River in front of the Savannah Riverwalk.

The body is that of Lacy Jones Jr. of Wagram, N.C., according to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police. An autopsy is being performed by the State Crime Lab in Savannah to determine the cause of death.

Police said there were no initial signs of foul play and that Jones appears to have been in the water more than a day.

During the night police confirmed that the North Carolina driver's license found in his sock belonged to him.

Four men in a boat saw the body floating in the middle of the river near the city docks just after 4 p.m. and pulled it to the docks by the shirt collar, according to police.

Boots and other possessions believed to have belonged to Wagram were found near the riverfront.

An investigation continues.
