Class action lawsuit filed after fish kill

SCREVEN CO., GA (WTOC) - A class action lawsuit is being filed against King America Finishing in Screven County even though the Georgia Environmental Protection Division still has no cause into the massive Ogeechee River fish kill.

A packed room of concerned citizens listened to the EPD officials as they explained what they found. They said they suspect bacteria killed more than 33,000 fish over the past three weeks.

They've lifted bans on swimming and fishing, they're not telling anyone to go into the water.

"It is an individual's judgment whether or not to go into the Ogeechee River at this time. Our analysis caused us to lift the advisories," said Jeff Larson, of the EPD.

"They still need to protect us and they let people swim in the river knowing better. That's a tough one for me," said David Gay of Effingham County.

The EPD says it is investigating King America Finishing because the fish started dying just yards from the plant's discharge.
