SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The city of Savannah is reserving a special honor for a Cuban immigrant who came to the city several decades ago.
Savannah Alderman Van Johnson honored Mario De la Guardia with a special city proclamation. A Savannah figure for 40 years, De la Guardia established the strength of Nature Global and was president of Carson Products. He was also president of the Broad Street YMCA.
As part of the ceremony, $10,000 was donated in his name to a Benedictine School for Boys scholarship.
"I was really surprised. I thought I'd done enough for the city and county. Mainly at Savannah State ... We've helped a lot of people here," he said.
