Imagine finding out that your child's bus stop is located near the home of a registered sex offender. That's what happened to some parents who live in Regency Mobile Home Park, near Burnt Pine Drive and Green Oak off Quacco Road. Now they want something done. A parent filed a complaint about this very problem weeks ago that went unanswered until today.
"This is our first knowledge of it," said the school board's James Harvey, Jr. "It's something our campus police and Laidlaw Transportation is working on."
It's a problem that the school system and Laidlaw officials say just recently occurred. School policy states that a registered sex offender cannot live with in 1,000 feet of a school, but we found out that there is no policy regarding school bus stops and registered sex offenders, and that's something Laidlaw officials say will change immediately.
"What we're going to do as a direct result of what we discovered today, we're going to prioritize any and all requests that come in here requesting that a stop be moved specifically for a sex offender related concern," the company's Rufus Smith told us. "We will deal with them individually, but they will receive priority."
Laidlaw officials will be approaching the board of education to see if they can develop a permanent policy to locate registered sex offenders so this problem doesn't happen anymore.
