An overnight blaze has heavily damaged a west side Savannah convenience store, and it appears it could be arson. Shortly before 3am this morning, Savannah firefighters were called to the Penny Saver store at Augusta Avenue and Fell Street. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the business, and a van parked there was also on fire.
Firefighters say it appears the van was set on fire first, and the blaze spread to the business. It only took minutes to knock down the fire, but hot spots continued to spark in the attic.
The van found on fire in the front of the store belongs to the owner, and someone had recently fired bullets into it.
Fortunately, there were no injuries, and fire investigators are looking for the exact cause.
