Man charged in Sunday shooting

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A suspect that was apprehended near an attempted armed robbery is now being charged with the crime.

It happened around 9:30p.m. Saturday, when officers were called to the 500 Block of E. Oglethorpe in reference to a shooting. The victim told police he was walking to get something to eat when he was approached from behind by a man. 

He said the suspect demanded money and brandished a handgun. That's when he ran. A shot rang out, and he thought he had been grazed. He kept running until he found an employee from Screaming Mimi's Pizzeria and they called police.

Officers observed a subject fitting the description in the area and gave chase. Forensics and K-9 responded. An area canvas was conducted where the suspect ran. A gun and a shell casing were recovered. The suspect, 22-year-old Richard Halston, had a magazine and bullets on him. He was apprehended in the 600 Block of East Broad Street.

The victim suffered a through and through gunshot wound. It is considered non life-threatening. He was transported to MUMC.

Halston, was charged with obstruction, a parole violation warrant, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, theft by receiving, and an additional charge of Aggravated Assault with intent to Rob was added Monday against Richard Halston. This incident is still under investigation.
