Savannah-Chatham police officers bid their final farewell to Mercury, a beloved police horse. The badge of the 15-year-old horse was handed over to his partner, Cpl. Sean Wilson, in a special ceremony at the police stables. Mounted patrol from as far as Charleston, South Carolina, came to pay their respects.
Mercury was on patrol at the Coastal Empire Fair when he suffered a heart attack and died.
"He was a police officer. Even though he was a horse, he was still a police officer and that's the way I see it," said Cpl. Lamar McCoy.
Sgt. Mercury served on the Savannah police force for 13 years.
