One Coastal Empire teacher has a lot to celebrate. We first brought you the story of a student who has agreed to help her surgical technology teacher in desperate need of a kidney. Last night, her coworkers threw her a unique "good luck" party. Yesterday was Kim Simmons' last day at work before the surgery and her coworkers wanted her to know just how proud they are of her for both her generosity and her bravery.
When the president and CEO of Memorial Health, Bob Colvin, found out what one of his employees was doing, he decided to give her the time off she'll need for surgery and recovery at full pay. "For many of us, it's once in a lifetime you see someone give of themselves to this degree," he said. "With her generosity I think that it's reasonable for us to do something like this to help her help someone else."
Simmons will check into the hospital Monday. The surgery date is set for the November 11.
