The votes have been cast and counted in the 2003 elections, and unofficial results show there will be a Savannah mayoral runoff between two longtime civic leaders, Pete Liakakis and Otis Johnson. Liakakis is leading Johnson by nearly a hundred votes. The other candidates are left behind by the two front runners.
Both candidates say they are ready to get back to work, and will run issues-oriented campaigns.
The Chatham County Board of Elections was kept busy with yesterday's large turnout of voters. As soon as the polls closed, the board offices started counting absentee ballots. Modem lines started buzzing with results being downloaded from Tybee Island to Savannah to Pooler. There were a few minor hitches in the system, but all in all, according to the board, things went well.
There was a 41 percent turnout of voters in Chatham County. But with a runoff coming, it's not over yet. The runoff is scheduled for November 25.
