CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Forty-sever-year-old Kenneth Sanders was wheeled into the court room inside the Chatham County Jail to officially hear the charges he's facing.

Chatham County Judge Thomas Cole read the list of charges to Sanders saying, "You're charged with felony murder, aggravated assault under the domestic violence act, possession of a firearm or knife while committing or attempting to commit a crime, and cruelty to children in the first degree."

Police say Saturday Sanders stabbed his wife, 28-year-old Nancy Sanders, to death.

"When officers made entry into the residence they found Nancy Sanders on the floor with Kenneth Sanders lying next to her holding a knife to his throat stating that he was going to commit suicide," said Detective Steven Holmes with the Port Wentworth Police Department.

Inside the home police say the victim's three young daughters, the oldest only nine years old, watched the entire ordeal, but managed to escape and got to a neighbor for help.

"They said he came home and started fussing and he pulled out his knife and started stabbing her and when he got off of her she said I feel like I'm dying. They kept asking if they could go check on their mother, but I told them they couldn't go back over there, said Lavonya Oliver.

Neighbors say they've never noticed any signs of trouble, but this isn't the first time police have been called to the Old Mill Road home.

"We have been called out previously on two other occasions. Only one was domestic-related and it was a complaint," said Holmes.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sanders Tuesday afternoon at the Port Wentworth court. That court, however, does not have the authority to set a bond because Sanders is facing a murder charge. That can only be done through the superior court.
