With school back in session, parents will want to know how to pack healthy school lunches.
In today's Fit Club, we went America's Second Harvest for tips on how to get your children to eat more fruits and vegetables. Chef Zimmerman said to make sure to pack colorful fruits and vegetables like diced apples and carrots. You can even freeze grapes or make ants on a log. For their sandwiches, use wraps or pita bread to make pin wheel sandwiches. They're easy to make and easy to eat and share. Make sure to pack some sort of dairy product, a milk box or yogurt. Healthy snack choices include Nutri-Grain bars, fiber bars, applesauce or banana chips.
"If you can make sure they have healthy lunches, healthy dinner and breakfast, then when they have those unhealthy snacks, at least you can make sure they are getting the vitamins or nutrients they need," said America's Second Harvest Director Mary Jane Crouch.
When children eat more fruit and vegetables, they generally experience better health and increased energy to keep them motivated to learn throughout the school day.
