The GBI Crime Lab will be conducting an autopsy on the bodies of a Richmond Hill couple after a shooting Monday night.

Richmond Hill police and first responders were called at about 8:15 p.m. Monday to 62 Mimosa St. in Richmond Hill.

Officers arrived to find Shirley Davis Hiers, 67, and Richard Earl Bates, 55, had been shot. Bates died at the scene and Hiers was taken to Memorial Medical Center by Bryan County EMS, where she died.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Bates shot Hiers and then took his own life, but the investigation continues, according to a news release from Richmond Hill police.

Police have no motive for the shooting and there was no indication of other foul play in the residence. Family members last spoke with the couple at about 6:30 p.m. and told police that nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Richmond Hill Police Chief Billy Reynolds said she's a well respected and well liked, community oriented woman and that a lot of people knew her.
