Yesterday was Veterans Day, and one Low Country family who is enduring a huge loss was given something special. Cpl. Armando Gonzalez was the first Beaufort Marine killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom, leaving behind a pregnant wife. Amanda Gonzalez, his now-two-month-old daughter, received the gift of a future education.

This all comes thanks to Am Vets Post 170 in Port Royal, South Carolina. Sgt. Maj. Kim Tully, a former Marine, heard about the Gonzalezes' story and decided to have a fundraiser so Amanda could go to college. In just a few months, $20,000 was collected and the check was presented to Amanda her mother, Liudmila Gonzalez.

"I am just very grateful for what they have done for my daughter," said Liudmila. "It's good to know that she'll have an education."

The Am Vets hope the amount of money will triple over the years it remains in the fund.
