Middle Schooler Raising Funds for Washington Trip

A Lady's Island Middle School student is on a mission to raise money for a leadership conference in Washington, DC. The Junior National Young Leaders Conference is a week-long event, and if Ashley Prysock gets to go, she'll be the first one ever to represent her school.

Ashley is one of six students at Lady's Island Middle School nominated to represent the school at the conference. It's an opportunity that has this seventh-grader pretty excited. "I was happy, well really happy," she said. "And my mom was too. She started freaking out and calling everyone on the phone."

"One of the reasons we nominate students is because we want students to develop strong leadership skills and zone in on some character education skills they need to build," said guidance counselor Vera Bright.

Teachers at Lady's Island Middle nominated students based on their academics, maturity, and leadership skills. "Ashley exhibits all of these things," said Bright. "She is a very good student, she has leadership qualities, she's willing to stand up for what she believes in."

During the six-day conference, students will have a chance to visit monuments and museums, research our nation's history, and attend a number of leadership workshops. "I'm excited because I've never been to Washington," said Ashley. "Well, I've only seen pictures of it."

And at the end of the conference, the students will give a presentation about what they've learned.

In order to attend the conference, each student must raise $1,700. If you would like to make a donation to help with the cost of the conference, contact Lady's Island Middle School at (843)322-3100.
