Fit Club: Curves just for women

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

There are several gyms, trainers, boot camps, and workout programs, however, many of them are not gender specific.

For many women, the idea of a fitness program designed specifically for women is really appealing.

"Maybe it's a safety net," said Lynda Graham. "When you workout with just women, you can be yourself no matter fitness level you are at. You don't have to feel like you are competing with muscle building men."

Graham has been a member of Curves in the Savannah Mall for nearly 5 years. A gym specially designed for women.

"I enjoy the comradery with other women. I like the fact that you can come do it at whatever fitness level you are at," said Graham.

As an elementary school teacher starting her day at the gym helps her stay energized and motivated.

"It has helped me a lot," said Graham. "I used to have a lot of breathing problems. I lost quite a bit of weight. I am a teacher. I can keep up with my kids much better."

The women go through a 30 minute workout that combines strength training, cardio and stretching.

"Women do not take time for themselves," said Curves at the Savannah Mall Manager Terry Williams. "They are with children, grandchildren, husbands and so on, but this is specifically for you. Everyone has 30 minutes for themselves."

There are no weights on the leg press. The machines use a hydraulic system to create resistance depending on how hard you work.

"They are hydraulic, so as you get stronger and put more into it that is what is controlling the workout," said Williams. The hydraulics."

Curves also uses a key system called Curve Smart.

"It's designed a more intense workout and we put all info in computer and the key tag goes in kiosk here at machine," said Williams. "The goal is to keep it green."

"It flashes yellow if you are not going as fast as you should based on your level," said Graham. "Keep watching the green and stay in green."
