Hilton Head Island sees early boost from holiday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Many are already hitting the road to enjoy the last unofficial weekend of summer.

Businesses on Hilton Head Island are gearing up for a big weekend.

Visitors from all over are vacationing on the island this weekend.

"It's just a great beach and the restaurants are awesome," said Jody Harnick, of Virginia.

The Marwaha family, who is visiting from Ohio, said the holiday weekend at the beach has become a family tradition.

"My parents are here so we tend to come down every Labor Day. It's a good time. The weather is great, [it's] not too crowded, [and it's] a great place for kids," said Andy Marwaha, of Columbus, Ohio.

The Holiday Inn Hilton Head Island Oceanfront as is filling up for the holiday.

"Labor Day weekend sort of brings people out for that one last vacation they want to do now that the kids are in school," said Skip Young, the director of sales and marketing.

Bluffton-Hilton Head Chamber of Commerce officials said occupancy throughout the island is looking good this weekend.

"Each year, our Labor Day weekend, we're traditionally either in the high 90s or sold out and we expect to be right there this year. It's always that last very good piece of business before the summer season comes to an end," said Bill Miles, of the Bluffton-Hilton Chamber of Commerce.

At Market Street Café, workers such as Julie Cardodo are hoping the weekend will give them a big boosts.

"It's our last big weekend of the summer and we're typically down until Memorial Day. It's typically pretty big, a lot of traffic coming through," she said.
