New book illustrates Gullah history

OKATIE, SC (WTOC) - An Okatie-based author has just released a book of the history of the Gullah people, their history and culture.

"The Gullahs of South Carolina" by Pearce W. Hammond includes illustrations and paintings, which outline facts and historical detail about the Gullah people and their contributions to Lowcountry history.

Hammond, whose uncle is Johnny Mercer, paints primitive works of the Gullah Culture shrimping, fishing, crabbing and gathering oysters.
