SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah and Richmond Hill have been named a 2011 Playful City USA by the nonprofit organization KaBOOM!

Savannah received the designation for a second straight year for its efforts to increase play opportunities for children and its outstanding dedication to play, according to the city.

Savannah and Richmond Hill are among 151 cities that received the designation. Savannah maintains 57 playgrounds, 661 acres of parks, nine public swimming pools and 14 community centers, according to the city of Savannah.

Richmond Hill plans to develop and enhance the play experience for kids at Piercefield and Boles Parks and it will add new equipment for more opportunities for kids to play in their neighborhoods, according to KaBOOM!

The 151 Playful City USA communities are eligible for grants via Let's Play, which is a community partnership from the Dr Pepper Snapple Group to get kids active nationwide.

Let's Play, Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! plan to build or fix up 2,000 playgrounds by the end of 2013, according to KaBOOM!

Grant winners will be announced Sept. 19.
