SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A fifth-grader was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday morning.
It happened at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday on Whitfield Avenue and Mendel Avenue.
A bus driver discovered the child lying in the middle of the street just after 8 a.m. The 11-year-old went to Hesse Elementary School and was walking to school at the time.
The child was backed over by a vehicle in the driveway. The vehicle is still being sought.
The Major Accident Investigation Team with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are at the scene questioning neighbors and witnesses. Investigators found three backpacks at the scene.
No arrests have been made or charges filed.
