SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The American Cancer Society is holding an award ceremony Monday night for Relay For Life participants, teams and the Chatham County Superintendent Dr. Thomas Lockamy.
It will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Savannah Commons at 1 Peachtree Dr. Relay For Life raises funds for the American Cancer Society. Funds raised stay within local community to provide free programs and services to cancer patients and their caregivers, according to the ACS.
The Chatham County School system is one of the largest Relay for Life supporters with 50 schools raising a combined total of $69,690, 34 percent of the total raised for this year's event, according to the ACS. Teams will be given awards for their fund-raising efforts.
"This was optional for them, and we were so successful. It's quite an honor to be here and celebrate with the organization." said Dr. Thomas Lockamy, SCCPSS Superintendent.
The top three teams this year included Savannah Country Day with $6,835, Team Nugent with $6,798, and Alpha Kappa Alpha's Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter with $5,831, according to the ACS.
