Kingsland woman arrested on forgery charges

CAMDEN CO., GA (WTOC) - A traffic stop on Sept. 9 resulted in the arrest of a forgery suspect and an accomplice, according to the Camden County Sheriff's Office.

Michaelle Denise Powell, 43 was in the vehicle that was stopped by an officer of the St. Mary's Police Dept. She was charged with eight counts of forgery and one count of impersonating another person in a legal proceeding on warrants issued by the Camden County Sheriff's Office.

Powell was also arrested and jailed as herself on Aug. 12 on first-degree forgery, identity fraud, driving with a suspended license and giving false information to a police officer, according to the sheriff's office. She was released the same day on a cash bond the same day.

Powell was first arrested by a Kingsland police officer on May 19 under the name Shandon M. Skaggs, 38, of Kingsland, on charges of driving with a suspended license, according to the sheriff's office.

Powell told that arresting officer and corrections officers at the Camden County Jail that she was and she was booked as Shandon M. Skaggs, the deceased widow of Jerry Virgil Skaggs Jr., 37, of Kingsland, according to the sheriff's office. Powell then bonded out under the deceased wife's name. Shandon Skaggs died on Oct. 17, 2010.

Skaggs, was arrested on Sept. 9 with Powell, was charged with identity fraud (party to a crime) and impersonating (another person) in a legal proceeding (party to a crime) for knowingly bonding Powell out on May 19 as Shandon Skaggs.

Skaggs and Powell were released on bond after the Sept. 9 arrest.
