Police: Man arrested in hammer robbery attack

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A homeless man who is accused of hitting another man with a hammer during a robbery attempt was taken into custody Friday without incident after being spotted at 34th and Whitaker streets.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said that Joseph Bennett hit another man in the back with a hammer on Sept. 8 during an attempted robbery in Franklin Square.

The victim told an officer he was walking east on Bryan Street from his job as a parking attendant at a church parking lot located on the corner of Bryan Street and MLK Boulevard, when the attack occurred.

A warrant had been issued for Bennett on charges of aggravated assault with the intent to rob.
