LYONS, GA (WTOC) - The Lyons chief of police was denied bond in his first appearance before a judge on drug charges.
Chief Ricky Newsome was arrested Monday morning and charged with marijuana possession, violation of oath of office and theft by conversion.
Newsome was called Monday morning and told to come to the Toombs County Sheriff's Office. When he arrived, Newsome was arrested, according to authorities.
There is no word yet on what this means for his position.
"It is heartbreaking to do this but we owe it to the public and we have to maintain the trust of the people out there," said Hayward Altman, District Attorney, Ga. Middle Circuit.
The investigation is being conducted by the Eastman Georgia Bureau of Investigations, Savannah Regional Drug Enforcement, East Central Georgia Drug Task Force, Swainsboro District Attorney's Office and Toombs County Sheriff's Office.
Newsome had been the Police Chief in Lyons for the last seven years.
