SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A 41-year-old white male was found dead in the Savannah River Sunday afternoon.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Criminal Investigation detectives are working to identify the man who Downtown Precinct officers recognized as a homeless man they have seen in the area.

Police say he died by drowning, although the exact cause was not immediately known. The death is under investigation.

The body was spotted by college students around 2:30 p.m. in front of the Dyson House near West Oglethorpe Avenue and West Boundary Street. He was wearing a dark shorts and shirt with tennis shoes.
