BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - Monday, hundreds of people packed the Charles Lind Brown Center in Beaufort to bid on 1,100 houses, mobile home, and commercial properties on the auction block for Beaufort County's annual Delinquent Tax Sale.
While that may seem like a high numbers of properties, County Treasurer Doug Henderson says it's nearly 500 less properties from last year. He says that's partly due to the amnesty program that they ran last month to help tax payers keep their properties.
"We're very pleased with the results, especially in this economic time we're in," said Henderson. "People just don't' have the money coming in and we're astounded we were able to reduce it by almost 500 properties from last year to this year."
In order to redeem their properties back, owners will have a year and one day to pay all of the current taxes, the delinquent taxes, fees and interest. Bidders get interest on their investment and get their money back.
