Police Catch Suspected Car Thieves After Chase

Two men are in jail tonight after leading police on a high-speed chase through Chatham County. WTOC was there as police made the arrest. The suspects actually pulled over and took off on foot, but police managed to catch up with them a few minutes later.

Pine Barren Road in Pooler is usually pretty quiet, but not today. "Originally I tried to initiate a traffic stop, for a speeding violation, and when I turned around, the driver of the car sped up and tried to run," said Maj. David Burke of the Pooler PD.

The suspects weaved in and out of traffic at speeds topping 100 miles per hour from Pine Barren Road to Highway 80 to Old Louisville Road. The chase went all the way to Dean Forrest and up to the Intersection of Highway 21. That's when things got worse.

The suspects blew through this intersection during lunchtime and swerved into an area near Savannah Tire. "I was working at the shop and I heard the wheels screeching," said bystander Roosevelt Thompkins.

"All of a sudden I saw someone booking across, when I say booking, I mean running real fast through the parking lot and the only thing I could do was look," witness Timothy Pickett told us.

Police chased the two men, and minutes later arrested 18-year-old Tim Duncan and Jason Anderson near the Suburban Lodge next door. It's something people in the area say they don't see every day. "In this part of town, especially you know, seeing things like that is very rare," said Pickett.

It turns out the car the suspects were driving was stolen from a transmission shop in Bloomingdale. Both men face multiple charges and are being held at the Chatham County Detention Center.
