Soldiers Return in Time for Holidays

More than 100 soldiers, stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, arrived home from Operation Iraqi Freedom overnight. The soldiers are members of the 416th Transportation Company and were sent to Iraq in March. The soldiers landed at Hunter about 2am this morning and were bussed to the post gymnasium where family and friends waited for their loved ones, glad that the deployment ended before the holidays.

The family of the company commander, Capt. Wendy Merz, even brought a big red bow, and put it on her helmet to show her homecoming represented the Christmas present they wanted the most. "It could not be better, all of the soldiers can get through the demobilization process...and they'll be home with their families for Christmas," said Capt. Merz.

These troops helped supply fuel to tanks and aircraft with Army, Marine and Air Force units. The battalion transported over 50 million gallons of fuel to its supporting units. Another 54 soldiers from an Army reserve unit stationed at Orlando, Florida, were on the same plane.
