CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - Oct. 5 is International Walk to School Day. Schools are participating in the one-day event to celebrate the many benefits of walking and bicycling to school throughout the month of October.
This is the 14th year of Walk to School Day. Participation reached a record high in 2010 with more than 2,500 registered events nationwide. This year Chatham County has six schools registered but many are participating.
Safe Kids Savannah sponsors the regional event. Participating schools received incentives and educational materials to give students and parents from Georgia Safe Routes to school. As the 2010-2011 School Partner of the Year Award Winner, West Chatham Elementary is serving as the host school.
Safe Kids Savannah is on hand to greet students and is hold an informational session on bike and pedestrian safety on Wednesday morning. Representatives from Safe Kids Savannah, Mayor Mike Lamb of Pooler, the fire department and many other organizations will be at the event.
