If you drive on Interstate 16 near Savannah, you might notice some changes. I-16 from I-95 all the way into the City of Savannah has been renamed the Jim Gillis Historic Savannah Parkway. The hope is to eventually transform that section of interstate into a gateway for Georgia's first city.
It promotes tourism and that has been very good to the city, to the county, and anywhere near the area," said Rep. Burke Day (R-Tybee Island). "We're excited about it and know it is going to blossom in the future."
The parkway still retains the name of the late Jim Gillis, longtime highway commissioner from Soperton and the man responsible for the creation of Interstate 16.
