ST. HELENA ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The cause of a crash between pickup truck and SUV remains that shut down Sea Island Parkway during the rush-hour commute on Thursday remains under investigation.
The Lady's Island St. Helena Fire District was dispatched just before 7 a.m. Thursday to a two-car crash near Polowana Road and Sea Island Parkway.
A pickup truck and a small SUV had been involved in a head-on collision, according to the fire district. Three people were trapped inside the SUV with severe injuries.
Sea Island Parkway was shut down while emergency responders worked to remove them from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life.
Three ambulances responded to the scene. Two ambulances transported each to Beaufort Memorial. The third ambulance took the most severely injured victim to a helicopter, which took that person to a local trauma center. A fourth person involved with the accident was uninjured and requested no medical attention.
Sea Island Parkway was shut down for just over an hour as members of the Lady's Island St. Helena Fire District, Beaufort County EMS, Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
