ST. HELENA ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - A body was discovered inside a burning car Thursday night on St. Helena Island.
Beaufort County sheriff's deputies responded at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday on a report of a vehicle fire in a wooded area off of Folly Road. Firefighters found a white Buick Regal engulfed in flames about a half mile from the intersection of Highway 21.
The burned body of a male with a possible gunshot wound was discovered in the driver's seat, according to the sheriff's office.
Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to confirm the victim's identity and cause of death.
Investigators suspect a there's a likely connection between this incident and Wednesday night's murder on Fripp Point Road, with both victims being well known by law enforcement, according to the sheriff's office.
