Crews clean up minor sewage spill

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Water and Sewer crews with the city of Savannah cleaned up a sewage spill on Thursday at 11607 Willis Dr.

A grease stoppage in a sanitary sewer collection system caused a manhole to overflow and drained into a storm water catch basin and into the Wilshire Canal, according to the city of Savannah. An estimated 1,440 gallons of sewage discharged into the storm water catch basin, which classifies it as a minor spill under Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

Crews were notified of the spill at 3:28 p.m., and the spill was fixed at 5:45 p.m.    

The canal was dammed up with sand bags and a pump was set up to pump the water from the canal to the sanitary sewer system which goes directly to the Wilshire Treatment Plant, according to the city.  

The city will be looking into the blockage caused by grease. The potential sources will be investigated and corrective action taken, according to the city.  

Public notification of all such spills is required by state law.
