The fire broke out around 2 a.m. Monday at a house on Apache Road, near the intersection GA 152 and Pendelton Creek Road.

Authorities say two people made it out safely, but an elderly woman did not make it out.

"We couldn't do a search on account of the fire. So we cooled it enough that we could. We did the search and found the body of the elderly lady that lived here," said Terry Findley, East Toombs V.F.D. Asst. Chief.

"Last night wasn't all that cool so I'm not going to say they did or didn't have a heater on. We really don't know," said Findley.

State fire marshals are working to determine the cause.

"Last night wasn't all that cool so I'm not going to say they did or didn't have a heater on. We really don't know," said Findley.

"We are getting to the season where we do see a spike in the number of fires we're working. The cold weather brings out additional heaters in homes, overloaded electrical outlets and things. People also find creative and non-traditional ways to heat their homes," said Donna Lee, American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross is working with the two people who were displaced from the home to provide financial assistance for food and clothing.
