BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) - Firefighters are stressing safety during National Fire Prevention Week.
The Bluffton Township Fire District kicked off the weeklong event with an open house. Families got to tour the station, check out the fire trucks and explore a fire safety house.
Attendees got tips about the dangers of playing in the kitchen, the importance of having a smoke detector and how to escape a fire safely.
"It's a unified message we're sending out to the public to make them aware of safety issues in the home, to protect themselves from fire. The more you're prepared, the better you're going to weather a fire in your home, especially with kids," said Sandy Stroud, public information officer.
Departments throughout the area are holding events during National Fire Prevention Week.
