HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - A Hilton Head Island man was arrested after a short chase with Beaufort County sheriff's deputies on Sunday in connection with a car break-in at a mid-island park.
Charles Coleman, 47, was charged with one count of breaking into a motor vehicle and one count of petit larceny. He was positively identified as the suspect who burglarized vehicle at Shelter Cove Community Park, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies responded at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday to the park after a victim found a window of his 1998 Chevy Silverado smashed.
The victim told deputies that a suspicious male was walking near his vehicle as he and his wife were walking in the park. When they got back to the car, he saw the man leave in a white Ford F150 pickup truck. The victim said his wife's purse was missing from the vehicle.
A truck matching the description was spotted on Dillon Road and pulled over.
Deputies saw a woman's purse in the truck, and Coleman was asked to step out of the vehicle. Coleman refused to comply and sped off, leading deputies on a brief pursuit throughout the worth end of the island, according to the sheriff's office. When he did stop, he taken into custody without incident.
The purse was identified as the one stolen from the park, and Coleman as the man seen before the break-in, according to sheriff's office. He was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where he awaits bond hearings.
