Shuman Elementary celebrates Columbus Day

Columbus Day is usually observed on the second Monday in October, but second graders at Shuman Elementary are celebrating all week long.

They're mapping out Christopher Columbus' routes and building ships.

They're also excited about making treasure chests since Columbus was in search of spices and gold. But it's not all arts and crafts. The 7 and 8 year olds had to write a persuasive mini essay on why they should be rescued from a ship.

Those notes are now floating in a bottle in the ocean.
