EOA hit hard by federal cuts

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

As temperatures begin to drop, utility customers are typically hit with some pretty stiff heating bills.

Unfortunately, thousands of Chatham County residents will not get the financial assistance they need to help pay their utility bills this winter.

People stood in line at the Economic Opportunity Authority office last December for financial assistance. At that point, the office was handing out vouchers on a first come, first serve basis.

The EOA provides assistance to low-income households to help with energy bills.

Federal funds have been cut by more than half compared to last year.

Program administrators say they know this is news will be hard for residents to take.

"In terms of paying their gas and electric bills the money is just not there to serve the number of people we served last year. So it's going to be tough all around," said John Finney, executive director of the EOA.

Nearly 3,000 people who may not received assistance and have to be put on a waiting list.
